Although the exact date and place of her birth are not documented, scholars believe Phillis Wheatley was born in 1753 in West Africa, likely in present-day Gambia or Senegal.

She was “sold” by a local chief to a visiting trader, who transported her to Boston in the British Colony of Massachusetts on July 11, 1761, aboard a slave ship named The Phillis.

Upon her arrival in Boston, Wheatley was purchased by John Wheatley, who enslaved her for his wife, Susanna.

The Wheatleys named her Phillis, after the ship that trafficked her from her homeland in West Africa.
